Name: Pope John Paul II

Alive: 1920-2005

Bio: Pope John Paul II served as Pope from 1978 to 2005, as is referred to, most commonly, as St. John Paul the Great. He is recognized as helping to end Communist rule in his homeland of Poland and eventually in Europe altogether. Furthermore, John Paul II improved relations with Judaism, Islam, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Anglican Communion. He aimed to transform the Catholic Church’s position in the world, and create a new religious alliance with Catholicism at the center.
